Christian Bale's Reign of Fire Finds New Audience on Streaming
Released in 2002, Reign of Fire pairs Christian Bale and Matthew McConaughey in an offbeat fantasy about dragons returning to Earth. The story is set in England in 2020, 18 years after dragons were re-awakened by a London Underground tunneling project, and the film is now climbing streaming charts — currently the third most popular title on MGM+ this week.
The plot follows Quinn Abercromby (Bale) and Denton Van Zan (McConaughey), two rugged survivors who must work together to kill the dragons and reclaim the surface. The cast also features Gerard Butler, Izabella Scorupco, Alexander Siddig, Ned Dennehy, Terence Maynard and Doug Cockle.
At the time of its theatrical release the film struggled: a $60 million budget produced just $82 million worldwide, and critical reception was poor, with a 42% Rotten Tomatoes score and a 49% audience rating.
