Real Madrid step aside as Man Utd emerge favourites for Fernandes
Real Madrid have stepped back in the race for West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes and regard Manchester United as the clear favourites. Despite Jose Mourinho's recent return to the Santiago Bernabeu, Los Blancos are not expected to make a formal approach as United's negotiations have reached an advanced stage.
United have moved ahead after Arsenal cooled their interest, and Fernandes has risen to the top of their midfield shortlist as Elliot Anderson closes in on a move to Manchester City. The Red Devils see Fernandes as a priority for this summer's recruitment. West Ham value Fernandes at £80 million, up from the £38m they paid Southampton last year, but relegation to the Championship has left room for United to seek a lower compromise fee.
