Julian Quinones opened the scoring in the ninth minute, slipping a shot through the keeper’s legs to register the first goal of the home World Cup at Estadio Azteca.

Mexico dominated the opening period, probing from the right and fashioning a string of chances; Gutierrez in particular caused problems and even drew a shot that struck the near post.

South Africa struggled to find any rhythm. Sithole’s poor touch led to the opening break, and early in the second half he was shown a straight red after a late challenge on Gutierrez, leaving his side reduced to ten men.

Half-time: Mexico 1-0 South Africa. Mexico had played fairly well; South Africa had barely played at all.
