An analysis by market insights platform Unfolded using DefiLlama data finds Q2 2026 has become the most-hacked quarter on record by incident count, with 83 exploits targeting cryptocurrency protocols. The quarter saw $755.3 million stolen so far, well below the $3.56 billion lost in the fourth quarter of 2020, which remains the costliest quarter.

The largest incidents were the KelpDAO hack of $293 million and a $280 million exploit of Drift Protocol. The figures point to more frequent attacks even as total losses remain below previous highs. Dmytro Tarasiuk, product director at risk intelligence firm CORE3 and crypto security rating platform CER.live, said a smaller pool of value available to attackers may explain the trend, noting total value locked in DeFi fell from $164 billion before the Oct.

10 liquidation event to about $73 billion at press time.
