Protesters will target Hyundai at a rally before the Group A match between Mexico and South Korea in Guadalajara, objecting to the carmaker’s business ties with South American steelmaker Ternium. The demonstration at the Plaza de La Liberación is intended to draw attention to Mexico’s so-called 130,000 disappeared, some of whom worked in the mining industry.

A 2025 report by environmental group Mighty Earth criticised Hyundai’s role in what it called a “dirty steel supply chain”, noting the company is a major buyer of iron ore from Ternium for steel production. Ternium has faced repeated criticism over its environmental impact, corporate governance and alleged links to the disappearance of two Mexican activists.

Three years ago two men vanished after attending an anti-mining community meeting in January 2023. Eyewitnesses said the activists were threatened and followed by several men in cars and motorbikes as they left the meeting and headed towards the neighbouring state of Colima.
