Promise David stakes claim as Canada lose 2-1 at home to Switzerland
Canada's hopes of another home game at the 2026 World Cup ended in a 2-1 defeat to Switzerland at BC Place, in front of nearly 53,000 fans. Two defensive errors early in the second half proved decisive as Les Rouges could not hold off Switzerland's quality, and the side now heads to the knockout stage in Los Angeles, likely against South Korea.
Promise David made an immediate impact after coming on in the 74th minute, scoring with his first touch before the stadium announcer had even named his substitution. The Royale Union Saint-Gilloise forward, who returned from a severe hip injury and surgery in February, used his six-foot-five presence to give Canada a different attacking dimension and could force his way into the starting XI if fully fit.
Switzerland struck early in the second half when Ruben Vargas finished at the back post in the 46th minute, and Johan Manzambi later added what proved to be the winner, his third goal of the tournament.
