Project Hail Mary Named 2026's Most-Read Book
Goodreads named Andy Weir's Project Hail Mary the most-read book of the year, placing it first on both the platform's science fiction and all-genre top 12 lists. The novel had spent 47 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list as of May and has sold more than 10 million copies across all formats, with the audiobook exceeding two million sales.
The film adaptation, released March 15, 2026 and directed by Christopher Miller and Phil Lord, reignited interest in the story. Starring Ryan Gosling as Ryland Grace and featuring James Ortiz as the voice of Rocky, the movie opened to $141 million worldwide and finished its run with $683 million, becoming Amazon MGM Studios' biggest film debut to date.
Project Hail Mary follows a classic hero's journey: a reluctant protagonist drawn into a "Hail Mary" suicide mission to save humanity, involving an 11-year voyage to a distant star system unaffected by an alien substance that is destroying the rest of the galaxy.
