Prime Video is adapting The Captive's War, a new novel by James S.A. Corey — the pen name of Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck, the writing duo behind The Expanse. The project arrives with high expectations and the potential to reset what audiences expect from televised science fiction.

Where The Expanse leaned into hard science and kept alien elements distant and often incomprehensible, The Captive's War embraces more imaginative possibilities, including relationships between humans and other intelligent life. That tonal shift makes the new series easier to compare with Battlestar Galactica, which centered on direct human–alien conflict.

The creative team behind the adaptation already mirrors the kind of engaged, fan-facing approach that has kept franchises alive. Abraham and Franck were closely involved with The Expanse and its cast, and Naren Shankar — an Expanse director — will act as writer and showrunner.
