Prime Video Renews Bloodaxe for Season 2 Ahead of Premiere
Prime Video has renewed the Viking drama Bloodaxe for a second season ahead of the series premiere. The show follows Erik Bloodaxe (Xavier Molyneux) and his wife Gunnhild (Jessica Madsen), the "Mother of Kings," chronicling their rise and brutal power grab in 10th-century Norway.
Showrunner Michael Hirst says Seasons 1 and 2 will invoke Viking beliefs and stage a "dramatic recreation of the way that Christianity has started to overcome the pagan world," a turning point in Erik's story. He also plans to "use magic realism in an effort to induct the audience into a Viking mindset," and described a scene in which Erik's younger half-brother Haakon (Levi Miller) tries to pray in church only to see ravens and Odin appear.
Hirst confirmed Season 1 will focus largely on the conflict between Erik and Haakon. Egil (Karlis Arnolds Avots), a Viking berserker and poet, will deepen the brothers' rift; Hirst called Egil "a gift from the gods" and said, "Egil is totally fearless.
