Manchester City’s long-running legal battle with the Premier League has reached a peak as football waits on a verdict over 115 alleged financial breaches. Rivals and critics are calling for the ultimate sanction of relegation, but concerns are growing that the governing body may lack the nerve to punish one of the world’s most powerful clubs.

Former scout Bryan King said City must face automatic relegation if the independent commission finds them guilty. "The only way you would teach them a lesson is to put them in the Championship," he told Football Insider, adding that a huge fine would be meaningless: "If they fine them a lot of money, so what?

They can pay it. If they come up with a figure of £500million or something ridiculous... is that going to go against the fair play thing and the money that they used to run the football club?" King also suggested the hardest penalties — points deduction and relegation — are unlikely because "Manchester City are too powerful in the Premier League.
