PlayStation exclusive game sales fall sharply over five years
Data compiled by Stephen Totilo at Game File shows Sony’s first-party game sales have fallen over the past five years, with fiscal year 2020 standing out as a recent high point at 58.4 million sales. That period included The Last of Us Part 2 (4 million sold in its release weekend, over 10 million lifetime sales), Ghost of Tsushima (2.4 million in its first three days, over 11 million total) and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, which together helped push sales above 58 million.
By fiscal year 2024 total first-party sales had dropped to 28.9 million, a decline of more than half from 2020, and each year between saw a reduction from the previous one. Fiscal year 2025 showed a modest rebound to 32.1 million. Both 2020 and 2024 stand out as outliers: 2020 benefited from the PS5 launch and a strong lineup, while 2024 was hurt by the calamitous release of Concord.
