Pippi Longstocking to Get Animated TV Reboot from Heyday Films
David Heyman’s Heyday Films is reuniting with StudioCanal to develop a new animated series based on Astrid Lindgren’s Pippi Longstocking. The project, also involving Submarine, The Astrid Lindgren Company, Beta Film, KB Nord Art and Sveriges Radio, was first discussed in 2019 as a feature but has been retooled for television.
Creators are pitching a 52-episode run of 11-minute 3D CGI episodes described as a “fresh, modern reboot,” with screenwriter Sara Daddy attached and production set to begin in October. Heyman will produce alongside Heyday’s Rosie Alison and Rob Silva, joined by Simon Quinn and Karen Davidsen; Ron Halpern will oversee the project for StudioCanal.
The feature the companies once floated remains in development, but the series has moved to the front of the queue. The move follows StudioCanal’s success with the Paddington films, which have grossed more than $800 million worldwide and expanded into a West End musical and a Southbank attraction; a fourth Paddington installment is also in development.
