Phone privacy settings to check and turn off ASAP

Smartphones can leave digital trails when apps have broad permissions. Running a permissions health check and tightening access can sharply reduce what your device reveals. On Android look under Settings > Security and privacy > More privacy settings > Permission manager; on iOS check Settings > Privacy and Security or Settings > the specific app.

Pay close attention to location, camera and microphone access. Set location to only while using the app or enable it manually; grant camera access only when the app is in use; and make the microphone ask every time or deny it unless the app clearly needs it. Apps that request both camera and microphone can record your environment and conversations.

Be cautious with contacts and SMS, which reveal relationships and communications, and with calendar access, which can expose your schedule, travel and medical appointments. Deny health and physical-activity data unless the app is specifically focused on fitness or medical services.
