Pentagon Again Revises Religious Categories for Troops
The Defense Department revised the list of religious categories service members can select in their personnel records after Republican lawmakers objected to an earlier memo. A May 20 policy memo had excluded the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints — whose adherents are often called Mormons — from being categorized as Christian, prompting fears that the department had adopted a view held by some Protestant groups that the faith is heretical.
On Monday the department posted a revised list that removed a "Christian" prefix previously applied to 21 other religious traditions but not to Latter-day Saints; the change followed objections from lawmakers. Utah Republicans Mike Lee and John Curtis, who are members of the church, alerted the White House and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to their concerns.
