Path of Exile 2’s trading economy collapsed in the season that introduced the temple, a system that lets players create dungeons by connecting rooms on a large grid. Meant to provide a new boss fight and temple-exclusive loot, the feature was quickly turned into the most lucrative way to farm items.

Players discovered a method involving locking a character in the campaign and repeatedly resetting a level to grow a temple into a money-making machine. By linking specific synergistic rooms in an endless snake so they weren’t deleted after runs, people could guarantee heaps of valuable loot and become in-game millionaires in a few days.

Developer Grinding Gear Games cut short its holiday break to deploy emergency patches. PoE 2 co-director Mark Roberts said the fixes “ruined Christmas for me” and added, “The Atziri Temple ruined my Christmas - I'll happily nerf it.” Hours after an interview in which another developer pointed out ongoing temple shenanigans, a patch addressed a further strategy that still threatened the economy.
