Scouted at 14 while waiting for a flight at JFK, Kate Moss quickly helped define the fashion aesthetic of the 1990s. She has appeared on countless magazine covers, including 43 issues of British Vogue, fronted campaigns from Calvin Klein to Chanel and Tom Ford, and delivered hundreds of catwalk moments, most recently a thong-baring appearance at Demna’s Gucci debut.

Musicians have sung about her, artists have sculpted and painted her, and a new film, Moss & Freud, directed by James Lucas and executive produced by Moss, examines her friendship with Lucian Freud in 2002 when she sat pregnant for him; the lifesize portrait later sold for £3.5m.

Early shoots signalled a shift in fashion photography. The 1993 Corinne Day images — Moss in a shabby flat, often in her underwear — felt like an earthquake for many, launching a grunge-inflected school of photography that combined darkness and sweetness and now sits in the V&A.
