Overwatch's Shion draws from John Wick, Kill Bill and yakuza stories
Revealed on June 9, Shion is Overwatch’s 52nd hero and the game’s 24th damage hero. The narrative team mixed classic yakuza tales with touches of John Wick and Kill Bill to create a vicious crime boss who upends the usual male-centric action archetype. Overwatch narrative lead Miranda Moyer says Shion 'thrives on the idea of excess' and carries a lot of baggage on her climb to power.
Blizzard is pushing storytelling through season comics and cinematics, and the team leaned on yakuza material when shaping the Hashimoto boss’ worldview. Moyer pointed to Lucy Liu’s O-Ren Ishii in Kill Bill as a clear reference — a character who survives trauma, pursues vengeance and builds herself to the top so she isn’t anyone’s victim.
Vengeance matters for Shion, but Moyer also hopes players connect with her struggle and the costs she paid to reach her position. That darker, hedonistic streak made its way into gameplay.
