Biopunk, which looks at how technology reshapes bodies and society, remains surprisingly rare. Orphan Black stands out as one of the best examples of the form and is streaming in full on Netflix. Beneath a conspiracy of corporations, mad scientists and human experiments, the series also boasts a career-making performance from Tatiana Maslany, who played 17 distinct clones across five seasons and went from an unknown Canadian actress to Emmy winner.

Created by John Fawcett and Graeme Manson, the show follows a group of clones under constant scrutiny from a biotech corporation called the Dyad Institute and the scientists who made them. Fawcett and Manson’s other projects include Ginger Snaps, The Man in the High Castle and Cube, but this small BBC America series most clearly mixes their interests in horror, dystopia and science.

The story centers on Sarah Manning, a British con artist returning to Canada.
