Capcom showed up during Sony's June 2026 State of Play with another look at Onimusha: Way of the Sword and finally revealed a release date. The game launches on Sept. 25 for PlayStation 5, Windows PC and Xbox Series X, and Capcom announced a demo set to go live today.

The trailer offered the first clear look at the story after months of silence. Musashi confronts unusual Genma while raiding a castle full of traps and demons, and exceptional sword skills alone aren't enough — he'll need souls. There is plenty of action, and the game still looks like a welcome break from the wave of Soulslikes.

Capcom released the first Onimusha, Onimusha: Warlords, in 2001 for PlayStation 2, and the original and its two numbered sequels followed samurai who stood against Oda Nobunaga. Those entries weren't aiming for strict historical fiction; in Onimusha, Nobunaga wields the power of Genma, spirits from the other world and Japanese folklore.
