Obsession grosses nearly 400x its $750,000 budget
Obsession, the supernatural horror thriller that opened May 15, has crossed the $297 million mark at the box office, according to Box Office Mojo. Made for $750,000, the film has now earned nearly 400 times its production budget, and its international run has yet to begin in some territories.
The film joins a small group of independent horror breakouts that have defied expectations, recalling the runaway success of Paranormal Activity and The Blair Witch Project. Another 2026 horror hit, Backrooms, has also been notable this year, grossing over $262 million on a $10 million budget; both films came from creators who were given the chance to make a feature.
Director Curry Barker has said he has ideas for a follow-up, including the possibility of an anthology, but has cautioned against rushing into Obsession 2. His next film, Anything But Ghosts, is set in the same universe as Obsession but is not a sequel.
