Steven Spielberg’s newest sci-fi movie, Disclosure Day, follows a man (Josh O'Connor) who steals information about a decades-long international conspiracy to conceal extraterrestrial visits. On the run from a shadowy organization intent on stopping him, he’s soon joined by a Kansas City meteorologist (Emily Blunt) who develops fantastical empathic powers; they share a connection that could change the world.

The film is action-packed and channels the vibe of Spielberg classics like E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. The X-Files, which began in 1993 on Fox, centered on two FBI agents investigating paranormal activity: the believer Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and the skeptic Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson), who eventually comes to share his pursuit of the truth.

Across its run the show split episodes between standalone “Monster of the Week” stories and “mythology” installments about a decades-old government conspiracy tied to extraterrestrial life — the latter providing clear parallels to Disclosure Day.
