Nightdive's System Shock remake finally launched in 2023 after a long development that began as a remaster; eight years passed between the announcement and the release. Producer Daniel Grayshon revealed the project had run out of money in 2018 and at one point looked unlikely to finish.

Some developers refused to let it die. A handful formed La Résistance, a 'small Discord group' determined to push the game to completion despite limited resources and shifting directions.

Grayshon was tasked with rebuilding Citadel Station in Unreal Engine 4 with no prior experience, learning from tutorials and online resources to get a foothold. The remake shipped to positive reception and remains faithful to the original while making practical adjustments for a modern engine, from doors that are no longer 'paper-thin' to more staircases and a more spaced-out layout.
