Nightdive says its remaster of Thief: The Dark Project will keep the game’s core experience intact while smoothing out some of the interface rough spots. Studio head Stephen Kick and producer Daniel Grayshon stress they want the game to look and feel familiar to long-time players.

Their first change focuses on controls: Grayshon wants to introduce a weapon wheel to make selecting items quicker. In the original, players cycled or used number keys and Tab to find tools; a wheel would let you open it and flick the mouse left or right to grab the square or triangle lockpick, for example, rather than cycling through pockets.

Kick playfully questioned whether the original design expected a thief to rummage through a bag of random items, and Grayshon replied that the wheel is optional.
