New Look at Resident Evil Promises Non-Stop Thrill Ride
A new image offers a closer look at the upcoming Resident Evil, directed by Zach Cregger and starring Austin Abrams as Bryan. Cregger, who made a name with films such as Barbarian and Weapons — the latter of which received an Academy Award — was given wide creative freedom on the project.
Rather than following a single game storyline, the film aims to evoke the feel of living in Raccoon City. Cregger said he was allowed to “run with it,” shaping Bryan as an everyman with no combat skills who is thrust into a crucial mission: “It’s kind of like Frodo going into Mordor.” Early test screenings described the movie as an action-packed roller-coaster, with one reaction comparing its relentless structure to Mad Max: Fury Road.
Cregger added that the film plays like a gauntlet: “Things pop off about five minutes in, and it basically stays like that until the end,” moving from set-piece to set-piece in the same rhythm as the games. The production promises a nonstop blend of horror and action that aims to capture the essence of the games.
