Warning: Spoilers ahead. House of the Dragon centers on the dragonlords of Westeros and the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons, which shattered the family and decimated the dragon population. By the time Game of Thrones begins, only a few Targaryens remain and dragons have been extinct for generations — until Daenerys later emerges from a funeral pyre.

Season two makes clear that a drop of Valyrian blood can be enough to bond with a dragon, and several low-born men answer Rhaenyra's call. Addam of Hull, one of two shipwright brothers, spontaneously bonds with Seasmoke — previously Laenor's — and bends the knee to Rhaenyra, becoming the first non-Targaryen dragonrider in the series.

The show also reveals that the brothers’ father is Corlys Velaryon. Ulf the White, a boisterous tavern regular who claims his father was Prince Baelon, flees into Dragonstone’s caves and unexpectedly finds Silverwing, who takes a liking to him; he later flies above King’s Landing and swears service to Rhaenyra.
