Netflix has revealed Fool Night, an anime adaptation of Yasuda Kasumi’s ecological horror manga that brings together Sunrise and Shaft in a rare co-helming. Atsushi Yukawa will direct the series, which is slated to premiere sometime in 2026 and will stream exclusively on Netflix; no exact date has been announced.

The story is set in a future where permanent cloud cover has plunged Earth into an endless winter and most plant life has vanished. To counter a worsening oxygen crisis, society has adopted a technology called "Transfloration," which converts near-death humans into oxygen-producing plants.

At the center is Toshiro Kamiya, a young man trapped by poverty who supports a mother with mental illness. He eventually chooses to become a "Spiriflor," a transformation that brings unexpected side effects. The manga mixes social commentary, existential drama, body horror and psychological storytelling, relying heavily on atmosphere and visual symbolism.
