Netflix Sci-Fi Series Dominates Streaming Charts Despite Sudden Cancellation
The Boroughs, an eight-episode supernatural sci-fi horror, surged up the streaming charts after its Netflix premiere on May 21, 2026. It recorded 1.2 billion minutes of U.S. viewing for May 18–24, finishing second, then rose to No. 1 for May 25–31 with 1.74 billion minutes — a 45% increase from its debut week.
Created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews and executive produced by the Duffer Brothers, the series follows a misfit group of elderly residents at an upscale retirement community who confront a dark, otherworldly threat. Alfred Molina appears as Sam, and critics initially greeted the show warmly.
Netflix confirmed the series' cancellation in mid-June, a move that surprised viewers and critics given the audience momentum. The decision came despite a writers' room already at work and reported plans to shoot seasons two and three back-to-back; Netflix has not issued an official statement, and the cancellation was attributed to high production costs and declining viewership.
