Netflix's new true-crime documentary Maternal Instinct has surged to the top of the platform's U.S. streaming charts just days after its debut, displacing the R-rated rom-com Office Romance that had occupied the top spot for more than a week.

The film chronicles the chilling case of Taylor Parker, who met and became engaged to hog trapper Wade Griffin in 2019. Parker, who had children from a previous relationship, fabricated a pregnancy using prosthetics and forged medical records and ultimately took extreme steps to obtain a baby. The film's final reveal is described as blunt and brutal, and some viewers on Rotten Tomatoes have called the story "twisted and unreal" and "a truly bizarre story."

Maternal Instinct now ranks #1 on Netflix's list of most-watched movies in the United States and sits at #3 globally, behind Office Romance and the Polish crime film Colors of Evil: Black. Reviews continue to arrive as the documentary climbs the streaming charts.
