Nicolas Winding Refn has long divided critics and audiences with a highly mannered neo-noir sensibility, and his television work has followed that same uncompromising path. After the divisive Too Old To Die Young, his Netflix series Copenhagen Cowboy stands out as a Danish-language modern noir with striking narrative and visual choices.

The show follows the young psychic Miu (Angela Bundalovic) as she navigates Denmark’s criminal underworld, avoiding powerbrokers who hope to exploit her abilities. Supernatural elements and fairy-tale motifs are central to the series’ themes. Miu’s reputation as a “good luck” charm becomes a liability when criminals like Rosella and her husband Sven desire her for their own benefit, and the show uses that tension to explore how the world preys on young women.

Rather than sideline its excesses, Copenhagen Cowboy leans into them while letting Miu lead the story and make her own choices.
