Netflix casts real Great Dane as Scooby in live-action Origins

Netflix shared a first look at the Great Dane playing Scooby in Scooby-Doo: Origins, a live-action series now in production in Atlanta. In the franchise's nearly 60-year history, Scooby has appeared in live-action before, but those adaptations relied on a CGI talking canine; this time the role is being filled by an actual dog.

The press still looks authentic, and the pup appears to be a real dog — in the photo and on set. The choice runs counter to a broader Hollywood trend toward digital creatures as visual effects improve and animal-welfare concerns grow, and it places Scooby among a lineage of notable canine screen stars.

Origins reimagines Mystery Inc.'s earliest days, beginning during the gang's final summer at camp, where Shaggy and Daphne become entangled in a mystery about a lonely lost Great Dane puppy that may have witnessed a supernatural murder.
