Netflix Adaptation Could Resurrect Fantasy on Streaming
Netflix, in partnership with Universal Global Television, has acquired the rights to Alix E. Harrow's 2025 novel The Everlasting. The high-fantasy, time-loop romance that captivated readers could offer the streamer a chance to reverse the recent uphill battle facing small-screen fantasy.
Harrow's novel follows modern historian Owen Mallory and Sir Una Everlasting, a mythical lady knight in an Arthurian-style empire called Dominion. Una's rise from orphaned avenger to celebrated warrior—and her tragic death that helps cement Dominion's oppressive power—intertwines with Owen's obsession after a lost manuscript plunges him back in time to meet the woman behind the legend.
The book weaves time travel, looping repetitions of events, and a mix of first- and second-person perspectives into a story about love, propaganda, and the cultural power of storytelling. Those narrative techniques and Harrow's poetic structure drive much of the novel's emotional impact, making a screen adaptation a delicate task.
