Netflix Acquires Icebreaker Hockey Romance for Series Adaptation
Netflix has acquired the rights to the Icebreaker series. Amanda Lasher and Jade Bartlett are attached to write and executive produce; Bartlett wrote the pilot and Lasher will serve as showrunner. Alex Cooper, Matt Kaplan and Mina Lefevre are executive producers through Unwell Productions.
Based on Hannah Grace's 2022 novel, Icebreaker follows Anastasia Allen and Nate Hawkins at the fictional University of California, Maple Hills. She chases an Olympic dream while he aims for the NHL; after an accident leaves them sharing the same hockey rink, they form a bond and must choose between their careers and each other.
Icebreaker is the first of three novels, followed by Wildfire (2023) and Daydream (2024). Hockey romances have become a streaming trend. HBO Max's Heated Rivalry became a sensation in December 2025 and Prime Video's Off Campus exploded in popularity upon its May 2026 debut, becoming the streamer’s third most-watched premiere season behind The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and Fallout.
