NBA The Run is a 3-on-3 throwback to arcade classics such as NBA Jam and Street, favoring moon-jump dunks, turbo buttons, gaudy tricks, and shouting commentary over simulation depth. The game’s stylized approach makes flashy plays easy to pull off, echoing the playful spirit of its inspirations.

The default squads mode places six players on the court with each person controlling a single character. The roster mixes real pros—each with distinct stats and animations—and unlockable street legends like the 7'7 El Gigante. It plays smoothly with couch teammates or in games that define clear roles, but in public 3-on-3 matches it often collapses into point-chasing chaos, with players rushing the ball, launching Hail Marys, and missing coordination tools like voice chat or pings.

Mechanically the game strikes a middle ground between pure spectacle and trick-focused play: dunks, blocks, and steals are simple inputs, while ankle breakers, legal shoves, and creative passes (even off an opponent’s face) reward style.
