Mothers' Instinct is a star-studded remake of the 2018 French psychological thriller. Set in picture-perfect 1960s America, the story follows two suburban neighbors, Alice and Celine, whose friendship collapses after the death of one of their sons. At its core the film depicts Celine’s chilling attempt to replace her dead boy with Alice’s, and the manipulative lengths she will go to pull it off.

The chain of events begins when Celine’s son Max falls from a balcony and dies. The loss drives the mothers apart, but Celine quietly begins to bond with Alice’s son, Theo. After a string of incidents — including a grandmother’s sudden death with no trace of her medication, an allergic reaction at Celine’s home, and increasing suspicion from Alice — Celine escalates her plan.

She murders her husband, stages his suicide, drugs Alice’s family, severs the gas line and sets a fire that kills Alice and Simon, then adopts Theo. One small, unsettling detail cements Celine’s transformation.
