Modern Warfare 4 Promises No More ‘Clowny’ Crossover Skins
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is due later this year, and Activision and Infinity Ward say multiplayer will not include “clowny” crossover skins. The game, unveiled last week, is being framed as more grounded and “anchored in the game’s narrative,” and the team told players to “keep the receipts” if that stance changes.
Fans remain skeptical after years of out-of-place crossovers—examples include animated duo Beavis and Butthead—and critics have compared the shift to the broader “Fortnite-ification” of shooters. On X the studio reiterated there would be no such “noise” at launch or in “seasons beyond,” and explicitly ruled out skins for Lady Gaga, Omni-Man, Teletubbies and SpongeBob.
Call of Duty has previously tried to limit crossover carryover by blocking skins from Black Ops 6 from appearing in last year’s Black Ops 7, citing negative player feedback, yet Black Ops 7 still added RoboCop and Fallout characters. The team also notes cosmetics will remain available in the free-to-play Warzone, so any change would not be universal.
