Mira Murati, who was often a background presence as OpenAI’s CTO and has been even less visible since starting Thinking Machines Lab, made her first major media appearance in about 18 months in San Francisco on Thursday. She said the company has spent the last year and a half raising capital, hiring researchers and shipping a product called Tinker, an API for fine-tuning open-source models.

Murati used the interview to preview what Thinking Machines calls “interaction models,” designed to process continuous streams of audio, text and video in 200-millisecond intervals so they can pick up on interruptions, mid-thought corrections and pauses closer to real time.

She emphasized that this is an early step rather than a finished product and declined to give a release date.
