Why Minions & Monsters is set during Hollywood's Golden Age

The Minions debuted as Gru’s bumbling assistants in Despicable Me (2010), and their popularity grew through six films. A 2015 standalone movie traced their long history across millions of years and showed how they’ve turned up at major moments in time. Minions & Monsters returns to an earlier era, placing the characters in 1920s Hollywood as studios churn out silent films.

While hunting for a new master the Minions stumble onto a film set; a brief, accidental appearance on camera makes them overnight stars. They adopt the Hollywood lifestyle, throw lavish parties, move into a mansion and inspire fans to dress in overalls and goggles.

Their fame collapses with the arrival of sound. The new talkies reveal a problem: they can’t follow a script because they speak only Minionese, and they fall into destitution, roaming the streets in search of purpose and a new evil master. Two new Minions, James and Henry, try to stay relevant by making their own monster movie, but the way they cast the monster nearly wrecks the town.
