Minecraft Dungeons 2 asks players to drop their pickaxe, pick up a sword and venture into the deep dark with friends. Positioned as an approachable dungeon crawler—a cheery alternative to Path of Exile 2 or a way for Diablo fans to introduce the genre to their kids—the original Dungeons never strongly connected with core Minecraft beyond visual design.

As development progressed, design director Laura de Llorens says the team sought ways to include more distinct "callbacks to vanilla Minecraft" without diluting what made the 2020 original special. One change is an interconnected world: not a full open world, but wide enough to encourage exploration.

The game has also adjusted item rarity to better mirror vanilla Minecraft. While Minecraft has four rarity tiers—Common, Uncommon, Rare, and Epic—the first Dungeons had three. Dungeons 2 returns to four levels—Common, Rare, Special, and Unique—to capture that sense of item scale.
