Microsoft quietly extends Windows 10 security updates to Oct. 12, 2027
Microsoft has extended consumer security updates for Windows 10 by one year, moving the program end date to Oct. 12, 2027. Customers already enrolled in the Windows 10 Extended Security Updates (ESU) program had their end date automatically shifted, and others can sign up anytime between now and October 2027.
The change appeared as small edits to existing Microsoft pages and an Editor's note appended June 25, 2026 to a June 24, 2025 blog post urging users to update to Windows 11; the note states coverage now runs through Oct. 12, 2027. There is no clear indication at the top of the updated pages that the program has changed, and a check of the Internet Archive shows the update was made within the last 30 days.
Microsoft did not offer an explanation for the extension. One likely motive is to avoid alienating OEM partners that depend on new PC sales; another is the large installed base still on Windows 10.
