Microsoft is considering concentrating more resources on its largest game franchises while also weighing structural changes for the Xbox division, including options such as a spin-off, making it a wholly owned subsidiary, or forming a joint venture with other partners.

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma’s plan to boost spending on Halo, Fallout and The Elder Scrolls has been approved by CEO Satya Nadella and CFO Amy Hood, though detailed budgets have not been finalized. The extra investment is intended to speed development: it has been 11 years since Fallout 4, 15 since Skyrim, and eight years since The Elder Scrolls VI was announced, with only a brief teaser released; Halo has similarly slowed since 343 Industries took over, and Halo Infinite halted new content updates in 2025.

Owning major franchises gives Microsoft an advantage, but history suggests that increased funding alone may not resolve deep development challenges. Whether the company will fully commit to turning that advantage into faster releases remains uncertain.
