'Michael' Poised to Become Lionsgate's Highest-Grossing Film
Director Antoine Fuqua's Michael, which opened in theaters on April 24 and stars Jaafar Jackson as the younger Michael Jackson, traces the singer's rise from the Jackson 5 in the 1960s through the height of the Bad Tour in 1988. The film is scheduled for digital purchase on June 9, 2026.
Michael launched with the second-best domestic opening of the year, taking in $97.2 million in North America behind The Super Mario Galaxy Movie's $131.7 million debut. It was also one of the few films this year to post a larger worldwide first weekend than most releases and has remained a consistent box office presence through six weeks.
As of June 5 the biopic has earned $346.6 million domestically and more than $508 million internationally, giving it a worldwide total north of $854.6 million. That figure puts Michael within roughly $12 million of becoming Lionsgate's top-grossing release, eclipsing previous leaders such as The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 2.
