Meta CTO says morale near all-time low after layoffs and AI shift
Meta chief technology officer Andrew "Boz" Bosworth said morale at the company is near an all-time low as recent mass layoffs and internal AI initiatives have unsettled many longtime employees. He made the remark during an internal "Tuesdays with Boz" chat on June 2, four people on the call said.
Bosworth compared the moment to the Cambridge Analytica scandal, calling that "probably the worst," and then said morale is "probably one of the worst it's ever been." It has been a difficult year for many employees. Meta laid off 10% of staff in May to offset its AI investments and reassigned roughly another 10% of the workforce to train its AI models.
Some staff described joining the mandatory task force as being "drafted" and viewed the work largely as data-labeling. In April, the company faced employee backlash over an initiative to track mouse movements and keystrokes to improve its AI models. Leadership has begun taking steps to try to improve morale.
