Meryl Streep's Narnia role could be more than it appears
Many viewers are delighted that Meryl Streep is attached to Netflix's Narnia: The Magician's Nephew, but the question of whom she will play remains open. Streep currently has a voice acting credit for the film, which has prompted widespread speculation that she will voice Aslan, and rumors have circulated that Greta Gerwig might gender-bend the lion — none of which has been officially confirmed.
One theory suggests Streep could portray more than a single role: she might voice Aslan and also stand in for an older Polly Plummer. In The Magician's Nephew, Polly is Digory Kirke's childhood companion, and she returns as an elderly woman in the final book, The Last Battle — a role that would suit Streep's stature and vocal presence.
The idea rests on thematic links in C. S. Lewis's story. Polly's influence on Digory and her symbolic presence in his life echo some of the hopeful, protective qualities associated with Aslan.
