Mbappe vs Haaland: Why their rivalry hasn't matched Messi and Ronaldo
Billed as football's next great rivalry, Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland have yet to reach the heights of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Two matches into the 2026 World Cup they each have four goals after braces against Iraq and Senegal, setting up a Golden Boot showdown in Boston that will decide who tops Group I.
They still trail Messi, who has five goals from Argentina's opening two games. Part of the gap comes down to club and international circumstances. Haaland is becoming a Premier League icon with Manchester City while Mbappe is a Real Madrid Galactico in La Liga, so they are not pitted against one another week in, week out as Messi and Ronaldo were in the Clasico era.
Norway's long absence from major tournaments meant this is Haaland's first finals at 25, whereas this is Mbappe's fifth and he helped France win the World Cup in 2018. The pair have shown mutual respect rather than antagonism.
