Masters of the Universe opens at No. 1 with $11.75 million
Masters of the Universe opened at No. 1 at the box office on Friday, taking in more than $11.75 million. The film is based on Mattel figures like He-Man and Skeletor from the early ’80s, and Nicholas Galitzine stars as Adam. Director Travis Knight called the material “weird” and “almost deranged,” noting “barbarians with battle axes and swords, robots with laser guns, spaceships, a warlock with a skull for a face,” and describing it as “pure, uncut, Colombian-grade ’80s excess.” The sci-fi psychological horror Backrooms was second, earning over $7.97 million on its second Friday, while Obsession placed third with $7.47 million on its fourth Friday.
The final two episodes of The Amazing Digital Circus, The Last Act, took fourth with just over $4.3 million. Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu came in fifth with $2.5 million on its third Friday.
