Marvel vs. Capcom 3 Update Breaks Dark Phoenix Mechanic
Almost 15 years after its release, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 received an unannounced update on Steam on June 15. The Steam patch notes list "miscellaneous bug fixes" and "verified compatibility with Windows 11," but players on the r/MvC3 subreddit say the update fixes some exploits—such as the "Kubota Escape"—while introducing a new problem.
Phoenix normally shifts to Dark Phoenix when she dies with a full five-bar Hyper Combo Gauge, a change that boosts her damage, speed, and gauge-fill rate and moves her from low-tier to top-tier. Since the patch, users report that the Dark Phoenix shift is inaccessible: when Phoenix dies with a max gauge, she simply dies instead of transforming.
Members of the UMvC3 Discord found the likely cause: the game now checks for more than five bars of Hyper Combo Gauge on death, a condition that can never be met because the gauge caps at five.
