Marvel Super Heroes set fixes issues from the Spider-Man cards
Mark Rosewater's affection for Marvel comes through in the new Marvel Super Heroes expansion. Where the Spider-Man set had a few fun character cards, this "Avengers and friends" release adds synergies and fresh mechanics that give the set real cohesion. One new mechanic is Plan, an enchantment that advances by stacking plan counters until it completes and grants a reward.
Doom Reigns Supreme, for example, advances when you play a Villain and eventually makes an opponent exile the top five cards of their deck so you can play two for free; each Villain entering under your control also makes you gain one life and each opponent lose one.
That pairs neatly with Doctor Doom, who is a Villain and creates two Doombot tokens, advancing the Plan and shifting life totals—"this is how he got to be President of the United States that one time" (in Doom 2099, admittedly). Teamwork appears on instants and sorceries, letting you tap creatures in addition to paying costs for bonus effects: HULK SMASH!
