Marvel Rivals creator tournament marred by drama despite $300,000 prize
The Marvel Rivals Creator World Cup Championship ran over the weekend with a $300,000 prize pool and creators from around the world competing for top honors. Team AMER United took first place and the $75,000 top prize, but their win was overshadowed by controversy.
The dispute centred on professional player Warn and members of Team Canada: aramori, Dokibird, Fanfan, xQc, and Surefour. Teammates say Warn does not play Rivals as much as others, was asked to switch heroes and declined, and that every match mattered because "there was money to be had not just for the teams who placed on the podium, so every win helped." Some of the backlash echoed an earlier incident involving a player called Zazza.
As aramori put it, "I got Zazza'd in a tournament 10x the prize pool as Basim. Kingsman was so much meaner and got a bajillion followers." That episode involved a $40,000 creator tournament where a player refused to try and mocked a teammate who wanted to win.
