Marquinhos consoles Gabriel after Champions League penalty miss
PSG captain Marquinhos said he put celebrations on hold to console Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes after the defender missed a crucial penalty in the Champions League final, arguing one moment should not define an outstanding season. After Arsenal's hopes ended in a shootout in Budapest, Marquinhos walked straight to Gabriel rather than join the immediate celebrations.
He said the image of Gabriel standing alone reminded him of his own painful moment when he missed a penalty for Brazil at the 2022 World Cup. Marquinhos told Gabriel to stay strong and hold his head high, stressing the defender had had an incredible season and match.
"I told him that, in my opinion, he was the best centre-back in the world this season," he said, adding that the missed spot-kick should not become a burden.
