Mark Wahlberg has long been a fixture in action and thriller films, and recently he has embraced physical transformations to inhabit new roles. For Flight Risk he shaved his head daily to portray a character with a receding hairline. Entertainment Weekly has released the first images from the 1960s-set By Any Means, in which Wahlberg plays hitman Gregory Scarpa.

In the film Scarpa teams with Yahya Abdul-Mateen II's FBI agent Wayne Strider to investigate the murders of a series of civil rights leaders in 1960s Mississippi, and the pair collide with members of the KKK. Wahlberg teased "so much wish fulfillment," adding, "This is going to be one of the great revenge thrillers in quite a long time." Director Elegance Bratton said the film frequently drew from real events, noting, "They really did burn down his home, he was murdered by them," and that Bettie Dahmer, a survivor of the attack, was on set the day the scene was filmed.

He said that history made it satisfying to confront the KKK in the movie.
